HMP LEICESTER - FIRST NIGHT CENTRE
The aim of this project was to create an environment that would meet the needs of prisoners going into the first night centre.
First night centres are where prisoners are risk assessed and then allocated a cell which they will stay in for up to five days. For most, prison will seem daunting, and this project aims to generate an atmosphere that will promote relaxation and ease to prisoners at their most vulnerable time.
Colour and nature can have a big impact on the way people feel. Research proves that nature can lower levels of anxiety, stress and depression. This has influenced the design; the use of natural wall coverings and appropriate colours should help the prisoners to feel calm and comforted.
Through research on colour psychology, the colours blue and green appear to be the best colours to 'calm' and 'reassure'. These colours have therefore been implemented into the design.
